The Ottomans have long been viewed as despots who conquered through sheer military might, and whose dynasty was peripheral to those of Europe, but the story is far richer and more complicated.
The Ottoman dynasty was, in fact, a crucial player in the power struggles of early modern Europe and had lasting cultural, political, and judicial impacts. Georgetown University Professor and author of the rich narrative The Last Muslim Conquest: The Ottoman Empire and Its Wars in Europe Gábor Ágoston will capture the key aspects of the sweep of Ottoman history, from the dynasty’s emergence and stunning rise to power to the Siege of Vienna in 1683. Over four sessions, Ágoston will discuss those who played outsized roles in the empire’s history, including Ottoman sultans and viziers and Habsburg emperors, the regions from the Mediterranean to the Middle East that both influenced and were influenced by the empire, and the everyday lives of the Jews, Muslims, and Christians that lived under the empire. Discover the Ottoman dynasty’s important role in the emergence of early modern Europe and the continent we know today.
