The Yiddish Literature of Russian Jewry
Novelist Maurice Samuel discusses the formation and development of the Yiddish language from the 1700s and 1800s. This lecture is part of a series exploring the Yiddish language. Samuel examines the ways in which Yiddish is a unique language, such as the ability of its structure to reflect the living conditions of its speakers, and its unusual adaptation of escapism and expressionism. He reads samples of writings in Hebrew, Yiddish, and English, explaining the differences in symbolic meanings when reading and translating in each language. The lecture is followed by audience questions.
