The Metaverse is a brave, new virtual frontier that will play an increasingly important role in our lives. But what rights will we have as individuals and communities in a world likely to be built by corporations? Even if the Metaverse is years away, critical decisions are being made now about how the future is being built. If we want to make sure we all have a voice, should we start thinking about a Constitution for the Metaverse?

Join Philip Rosedale, web pioneer and creator of virtual world Second Life, Dave Waslen, Co-Founder of Metaverse platform Wilder World, and Gayatri Khandhadai, Digital and Human Rights and Policy Expert, in conversation with Brittan Heller, Senior Fellow at The Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab, for an in-depth discussion on safeguarding global democracy in this emerging digital environment.

Philip Rosedale

Philip Rosedale is the Founder of Linden Lab, parent company of Second Life, an open-ended, Internet-connected virtual world and pioneering metaverse. Following Second Life, he worked on several projects related to distributed work and computing. Excited by innovations in these areas and the proliferation of new VR-enabling devices, he re-entered the virtual worlds space in 2013, co-founding High Fidelity, a company devoted to exploring the future of next-generation shared virtual reality. Philip rejoined Second Life in 2022, as Strategic Advisor, focused on helping to shape and build a better metaverse.

Prior to Linden Lab, Philip created an innovative Internet video conferencing product (“FreeVue”), which was later acquired by RealNetworks, where he went on to become Vice President and CTO.

David Waslen

David S. Waslen is Co-Founder of Wilder World, a 5D NFT Metaverse, and CEO/Founder of Accretive, a tech investment & advisory practice. He has executive experience in corporate finance, venture capital, and private equity, and has been full-time in the Web3 sector since 2016. His expertise lies in discovering and building out next generation tech platforms with a focus on decentralized, open protocols.

David is based out of Singapore and is a graduate of London Business School and Dartmouth College.

Gayatri Khandhadai

Gayatri Khandhadai is the Head of Technology and Human Rights at the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre and is based in India.

Gaya joined the Resource Centre in February 2022. She is a lawyer with a background in international law and human rights, international and regional human rights mechanisms, research, and advocacy. She previously worked with national and regional human rights groups, focusing on freedom of expression. More recently she worked as the Asia Policy Regional Coordinator at the Association for Progressive Communications where her focus was on digital rights and policy in Asia with specific emphasis on freedoms of expression, religion, assembly and association on the internet. Her areas of expertise include capacity building, network support, policy advocacy on regulations and adoption of human rights-based approach to internet governance. She holds an M.A. in International Law and Human Rights from the University for Peace, Costa Rica and a B.A. BL (Hons) from the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, India.

Brittan Heller

Brittan Heller works at the intersection of technology, human rights and the law. She is currently a fellow at the Atlantic Council, with the Digital Forensics Research Lab, examining XR’s connection to society, human rights, privacy, and commerce. She is also on the steering committee for the World Economic Forum’s Metaverse Governance initiative. Heller was an inaugural AI and Technology Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School, studying content moderation and security risks in VR/AR/XR and emergent media, which resulted in award-winning publications on privacy, biometrics, targeted advertising, and XR.

Heller is a frequent speaker and commentator on XR issues, and has published in The Information, Wired, The New York Times, and the Hill on online harms. She also advises governments and top XR companies on how to build safer and more inclusive immersive spaces.

As former counsel in Foley Hoag LLP’s Global Business and Human Rights practice, Heller advised companies, investors, and NGOs on integrating public safety and human rights. She previously founded ADL’s Center for Technology and Society. Her key projects included creating AI to study hate speech and XR experiences for civil rights advocacy. Additionally, Heller prosecuted grave human rights violations at the U.S. Department of Justice and the International Criminal Court and initiated landmark anti-cyber harassment litigation. She is a graduate of Stanford University and Yale Law School.
