Merit Scholarship For Excellence in Art, Dance and Music (Ages 7-17)

David Alvarez, Tony Award® winner for Billy Elliot, started his musical studies at 92Y as a beginner pianist in fall 2006. He showed such potential that he was awarded a full-tuition Recanati-Kaplan scholarship to study piano privately through 2012. David also became involved with dance and went on to perform in Billy Elliot the Musical on Broadway.

Anais Reno, Specializing in Jazz and Blues singing, Anaïs has performed as a soloist with Grammy Award winners Vince Giordano and the Night Hawks, twice at Jazz at Lincoln Center, at Avery Fisher Hall, Symphony Space, the Kosciuszko Foundation, at the 92nd Street Y, and other venues throughout the city.

Since 2013, Anaïs has been member of the New York Philharmonic’s Very Young Composers program. Through this program she composed an orchestral piece that was performed by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in Avery Fisher Hall, and recently she wrote the lyrics, composed and sang “For Ayham” with New York Philharmonic chamber musicians at a benefit concert for refugee children, in Avery Fisher Hall. She has also performed her own composition at Symphony Space, and her string quartet was performed by the Jack Quartet and the Toomai Quintet. In April 2015, her string quintet was featured by the Tomai Quintet.

Oona Laurence, started acting at age five in her Dad’s film  DAYS DANCE, and went on to shoot a dozen shorts, including being reincarnated in REINC,  turning the tables on a kidnapper in the Utah high desert in PENNY DREADFUL (which won 30 plus awards in festivals worldwide), and learning Romanian for ESTHER.  She won a Tony and was nominated for a Grammy as one of the original MATILDAs on Broadway, and has since workshopped the role of Young Amelie in a new musical based on the movie AMELIE.

Her first feature film was A LITTLE GAME with F. Murray Abraham and Ralph Macchio, and since has appeared in THE GRIEF OF OTHERS, I SMILE BACK, and played the lead in LAMB.  She’s also been on ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK and LAW AND ORDER.  In Summer 2014 she shot SOUTHPAW with Jake Gyllenhaal and Rachel MacAdams, and most recently shot a Disney feature PETE’S DRAGON in New Zealand with Robert Redford and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Audrey Zhang has been drawing continuously almost every day since she was two years old. She prefers using black ink pen to draw images from her mind, and almost every picture of hers is different. The winner of many art competitions, she was most recently named national champion for Google 4 Doodle in 2014.

Students demonstrating particular excellence in their field are eligible to receive end-of-the-year awards, which can be used towards college tuition.

Audition Information:

Tue, Jun 14, 2016

Dancers will participate in a group audition that will include a variety of techniques. For the group audition, no material needs to be prepared beforehand nor does a student need to have experience in every technique in order to audition. Callbacks will consist of a short interview and the chance to perform a short solo (less than one minute) of material the student feels confident performing. The material does not need to be original choreography but certainly can be. If a student is using music, s/he should bring a CD to the callback. Dancers should come in appropriate dance clothing that is form-fitting and should bring ballet and/or jazz shoes if they have them. Applications must be submitted (via web or paper mail) to 92Y Harkness Dance Center no later than Friday, June 10, 2016.
