Since 1935, 92Y has nurtured exceptional talent in dance, including pioneers Graham, Humphrey, Sokolow, Cunningham, Hawkins, Robbins and Ailey, among others.

92nd Street Y has been a historic home of modern dance, nurturing the talents of such dance pioneers as Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman, Anna Sokolow, Hanya Holm, Alvin Ailey, Merce Cunningham, Robert Joffrey, Pearl Primus and Lester Horton. These artists created, performed and taught at 92Y, building the foundation for contemporary dance as we know it. Today, with generous support from the Harkness Foundation for Dance, the 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center continues to be a home for dance teaching, creation and performance, serving the professional world and the community at large.

Master artists, including artist-in-residence Doug Varone, continue to practice, create and celebrate dance! New to the Harkness Dance Center? Call 212.415.5553 and let us find the right class for you.
