THE IMPACT OF YOUR SUPPORT
March 16-June 30, 2020

THANK YOU.

During this unprecedented time, your support has made a vital impact on the lives of everyone in our community. When we were forced to close our doors on March 16, your support enabled us to pivot quickly to a new, online model, bringing the highest quality remote programming to our community.

As much of the world sheltered in place, 92Y delivered — and continues to deliver — life-affirming events, classes and connection online to ease anxieties, educate our children, help parents cope, care for potentially isolated elders, and bring the light and hope of the arts to anyone who needs to be reminded of humanity’s resilience, strength and goodness.

Under normal circumstances, you would be receiving our annual Impact Report in January, reporting on the entirety of the previous fiscal year. But we thought it was important to show you what we did in the period between March 16 to June 30, 2020, so we created this special report for you.

As we start our new fiscal year, the future is no more certain than it was in March. We ask that you keep 92Y in your thoughts as an organization in need, so that we may continue serving our extended community no matter what the future brings.

Thank you for everything you have done — and continue to do — for 92Y.

A lifeline for our senior community

Knowing that our seniors were most vulnerable to the devastating effects of social isolation, finding a way to continue our Himan Brown Senior Program remotely was a top priority in March. This never-to-be-underestimated group quickly embraced technology and, with the help of program director Julia Zeuner and her team, were soon Zooming into remote art and writing classes, discussion groups, lectures and more. “While the classes are important, the real goal is for members to see and hear each other on a regular basis,” said Julia. “It helps them to maintain a sense of familiarity during a time when everything feels out of control.”

And as the New York Times reported, dozens of 92Y staff volunteers are calling Himan Brown members every week just to chat.

The Himan Brown Senior Program is a miracle for me. I am still growing and changing during this difficult time.”

— 92Y Himan Brown Senior Program member

We love what you are doing … We are so lucky to have so many opportunities to bring joy and light into our lives.”

An essential
resource
for parents and families

From new parents looking for advice and guidance, to families struggling to keep young children happily occupied while they worked from home, to older children in need of connection and enrichment, 92Y has pulled together all its resources to continue to help and support families during this time.

We have absolutely loved every minute of the class, but I am particularly touched at how much time and energy the teachers are putting into rebuilding the connections with the children and families. Truly an exemplary group of teachers!”

You have been the light during these dark days!”

Thank you for the constant updates and communications. These are extremely frightening times. I’m grateful for the support of the parenting center and 92Y community. Together we will get through these difficult times.”

The go-to place for virtual arts performances

On March 14, we streamed what would be the first of dozens of remote concerts with artists of global renown: pianist Garrick Ohlsson, performing Brahms to our empty hall. Two days later, we closed our building completely, but continued to bring world-class and emerging artists to audiences all over the world, streaming new live performances and opening our archives to reveal previously unreleased treasures.

The Y’s outreach has been extraordinary, easily eclipsing the dozens of other organizations with which I am affiliated. The arts programming — the first-class live feed concerts and the superbly packaged archive offerings — are so rich and engaging. Bravo!!! To online visitors like me, this appears to be an all-hands-on-deck collaboration. Whatever it is, don’t change it!.”

— 92Y Patron

I felt so lucky to be able to watch Garrick Ohlsson’s recital — what a treat! Please let the performers know their music is heard and appreciated from afar.”

— 92Y Patron

This is a very grateful message from a livestream attendee. Thank you for last evening's glorious concert. Fleur Barron gave an absolutely stunning performance. I am so very appreciative of the performers' commitment to the evening, and thankful to the 92nd Street Y for its foresight.”

A hub for excellence in adult learning

92U: The new online university of the 92nd Street Y

Over the course of history, 92Y has counted such figures as Emma Lazarus, W. H. Auden and Zero Mostel on its teaching faculty. Today, our patrons are telling us what a lifeline fully immersive, online adult learning can be.

That’s why we’ve created 92U, our new online university. There are no tests, grades or college credits — just unlimited opportunities to learn with some of the world’s most in-demand experts from top centers of learning, museums, art galleries, business and media. New master classes — like the Great Thinkers series — bring the kinds of thought leaders who appear onstage at 92Y directly into the homes of our patrons. Personal, intimate, highly engaging, these immersive experiences are designed to be as close to a one-on-one with some remarkable teachers as it’s possible to get.

A mainstay for creativity and connection through the arts

As the pandemic closed studios and ended in-person learning, 92Y’s Gilda and Henry Block School of the Arts — which comprises the Art Center, School of Music and Harkness Dance Center — was among the very first in NYC to figure out the seemingly impossible task of moving its visual arts, music and dance classes online.

Art Center

Almost over a weekend, the Art Center’s faculty of expert teachers and educators developed new ways to provide students with coaching, inspiration, expertise and encouragement remotely. And this summer, nearly 100 new classes with some of the city’s finest teachers have been keeping creativity alive. “It’s been so exciting to see how students from all over the country are discovering the excellence of our instructors, with new signups from as far afield as Canada and Brazil,” said Allison Valchuis, Director of the Art Center.

The School of Music teachers quickly established ways to keep their students engaged remotely. Music appreciation class attendance soared online, and Yana Stotland, Director of the School of Music, created new “partner” music lessons for beginners to bring — or meet — a friend and learn a new instrument together. And in our merit-based Recanati-Kaplan scholarship program for gifted and talented students ages 7-17, the individualized teaching and coaching continued without missing a beat. “I just wanted to comment that his transition to online classes has been really smooth and far beyond my expectations,” wrote the parent of a Recanati-Kaplan scholarship student. “He has grown and benefitted tremendously in all his classes. Also, [my son] was accepted into LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts, which we are thrilled about!”

The shutdown came as the Dance Education Laboratory (DEL) marked its 25th anniversary of educating the dance educators of tomorrow — but that didn’t put a stop to DEL’s activities. Courses continued online, enabling students to take the program’s invaluable summer workshop from their homes. Our virtual DEL Summer Institute sold out, and new sessions were added to accommodate demand; a brand-new DEL class for families was launched, along with a new workshop on the art of teaching choreography through Zoom.

“Despite the lockdown, 92Y kept dance moving forward,” said Taryn Kaschock Russell, Director of the Harkness Dance Center. Students of all ages discovered the connection and joy that remote classes can bring. “Teaching any dance class on-line has its own challenges, but this class in particular has been a lot of fun as we have entered the virtual dance world together,” wrote Susan Rosenbaum, who leads the Center’s Ballet for Life class. “The class is called Ballet for Life, but it is also about sharing for life, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.” And technology enabled high-school students to connect with some of today’s most exciting and innovative choreographers in a new series of weekly workshops — bringing together teens from as far afield as Italy, Canada and England.

A place for fun, friendship and adventure through our Virtual Camp Live

Throughout the spring, Lauren Wexler, Director, 92Y Camp Programs, and her team worked nonstop to figure out summer camp scenarios for the children and families who rely on 92Y to provide unforgettable camps experiences in our Rockland County location. But finally, in June, they realized that the pandemic would make it impossible for the camps community to gather in person. Without missing a beat, Lauren and her team created 92Y Virtual Camp Live — an online series of programs for children ages 2-13, bringing them all the connection, adventure, age-appropriate activities and excellent instruction that in previous years had made 92Y Camps so special.

  • What’s next — with your support

To help families transition back to school this fall (in whatever form that will take), Lauren and her team are planning an in-person learning and enrichment program. Families will be able to drop off their children at 92Y, where they will safely be able to participate in their own schools’ remote classrooms, and then take an enrichment program with 92Y’s teaching experts.

  • Your counselors and instructors were superb. Their patience was unparalleled and when Yaffa asked for help they not only helped her but kept coming back to respectfully check in on her. They made Yaffa feel extremely welcome and special. Thank you so much!”

    — 92Y Camps Parent

Congratulations on launching such a program so quickly. That's why 92Y is world class.”

92Y Confronts Hate

In response to the ongoing rise of hatred in today’s society, we launched a new initiative: 92Y Confronts Hate, designed to bring people together as a community to examine racial injustice in America and beyond, and our roles in the fight against racism, anti-Semitism and hate in all its forms. Important conversations with speakers including playwright and actress Anna Deavere Smith, Reverend Jacques Andre DeGraff, Rabbi Delphine Horvilleur, Imam Dr. Al-Hajj Talib ’Abdur-Rashid, some moderated by Rabbi Peter J. Rubinstein took place in June; forthcoming programs include a Reel Pieces Remote series with Annette Insdorf examining racial justice in film; conversations with activists and thought leaders like Symone Sanders, literature classes on works that reckon with racism and resistance; curated and commissioned dance performances; parenting classes on raising children with empathy; literary readings of seminal texts on the subject, and much, much more.

A fount of Jewish joy and connection

Since Covid-19 made it impossible for us to meet in person, our team — led by Rabbi Peter J. Rubinstein — has provided innumerable opportunities to connect to the extraordinary meaning that Judaism offers.

Insight and conversation with leading voices of all faiths

Reaching across boundaries, Rabbi Peter J. Rubinstein moderated a series of talks to help bring us together by shining a light on all perspectives and viewpoints.

Rabbi Peter J. Rubinstein moderated a series of talks

Events included an interview with Tony Blair at our 92Y Together celebration, online talks with spiritual leaders like Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Rabbi Delphine Horvilleur and many more.

Jewish education and inspiration for all

Rabbi Rubinstein and his team led an extensive range of intimate, personal classes for everyone in the community — all online.

Thank you for a fascinating class last night. I have collected about a dozen titles on the Kabbalah, but any reading I did resulted in confusion. Yours was the first explanation that began to clarify things for me.”

— 92Y Patron

Tonight's class was beautiful. Thank you so much for leading us through such heavy topics.”

— 92Y Patron

I really can't thank you enough for having this class. Even before all of this and especially now.”

Seders and celebrations

We welcomed our community to celebrate Passover with us.

The Seder Thursday was great and very uplifting. Would you kindly let Rabbi Frank know she made a Torontonian very happy with her beautiful Seder.”

— 92Y Patron

Such a fantastic service. Such a light.”

— 92Y Patron

Thank you for your leadership of the seder this evening. During the time we were online, we felt part of our 92Y community.”

— 92Y Patron

And every Friday evening at 6 PM ET, Rabbi Rubinstein welcomed everyone into his home to celebrate Shabbat on Facebook — attracting more than 42,000 views since March 20.

Wisdom and insight, shared with the world

Every Sunday, Rabbi Rubinstein shared his “Thought for the Day” with our extended community through 92Y@Home, a series of daily emails we sent throughout the shutdown — which has been opened more than 2 million times.

92Y Shababa Live!

Although our classrooms were closed, 92Y’s Rebecca Schoffer and her puppets continued to bring young families and children together twice a week (or more!) through online Shababa celebrations.

Despite being in our apartment just the two of us it really did feel like being part of a community. And you were amazing in making it fun and engaging.”

— 92Y Shababa Parent

Thank you for continuing to bring together our community during this craziness.”

More enrichment programs for more schools

For almost 25 years, 92Y has been one of NYC’s biggest providers of arts education, bringing exceptional programs to 16,000 public school students and their teachers in all five boroughs each year.

What’s next — with your support

This fall, we are launching an ambitious new program for students and teachers right across the country.

The new Young Leaders Series for schools offers an unparalleled range of online programming in the arts, civics, science, politics and more

When cultural institutions shut down in March, 92Y was one of the very first to pivot to event livestreams and online instruction. We rapidly gained experience and fluency in virtual learning across the institution. Ava Lehrer, Director of 92Y’s Center for Arts Learning and Leadership (CALL), and her team have put to use our institution’s newfound knowledge and skills in a massive expansion of our educational outreach programs — with the new Young Leaders Series, a first-of-its-kind, curriculum-based, event subscription series for students in grades 3-12 in schools across the country.

92Y’s educational videos are absolutely incredible. Riveting material, which glued me to my screen with wonderment for the entire 18 minutes and 40 seconds. The video managed to capture all the different aspects of good teaching… Thank you. Send more.”

DORRANCE DANCE | CHRISTIAN McBRIDE | JESS KEATING | ANTHONY McGILL | AMANDA Litman | DAVID MITCHELL | ROXANE GAY | CASEY GERALD SHARON ISBIN | CLAUDIA RANKINE | and many more

These are just some of the luminaries in the arts, sciences and humanities who are participating in our Young Leaders Series this fall.

Ava Lehrer says: “Cultural institutions nationwide are struggling to figure out how to adapt to the current reality and serve their communities. We're ready. We've come up with a model that takes the amazing work and presenters already central to our programming areas and brings them into the range of educational settings this moment requires, from virtual to hybrid. We're able to engage more students with more outstanding talent than ever before at precisely the time this is most needed.”

A resource for ideas and inspiration

WHAT GOOD SHOULD I DO THIS DAY?

The question posed by Benjamin Franklin continues to inspire us — especially during these challenging times. Connecting communities, ensuring voices are heard, and nurturing ideas from the ground up, the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact’s programs embody the mission of 92Y.

Women inPower is 92Y’s fellowship program that provides senior-level women the peer support, mentoring, training and coaching needed to advance them to the highest levels of leadership. During this pivotal moment for women’s leadership, we developed online workshops on navigating Covid-19 and what it means for women as leaders, managing teams with compassion, collaborating more effectively, and managing support networks.

The Women inPower fellowship has been a constant place to return to, to help remain invigorated and motivated. As someone directly on the front lines of Covid, and responsible for the safety of patients and staff, I have been incredibly focused and bogged down. Hearing about what others are seeing, feeling, and doing has been incredibly insightful. It has also been very beneficial to have a cohort of colleagues who support and empower each other.”

— Women inPower Fellow

I am developing skills and insights that I apply all the time back at my job. It is great to have new knowledge/stimulus, which otherwise I would not be prioritizing during this pandemic. It's also helping give me broader perspective on careers, roles, life, etc., during this very difficult time.”

— Women inPower Fellow

Value-driven conversation using Ben Franklin's virtues as an anchor is just a breath of fresh air and so motivating to continue finding ways to self-improve AND get involved in community work.”

— Ben Franklin Circles member

Ben Franklin Circles, 92Y’s transformative self-improvement groups initiative, reached out to circles and individuals around the nation with a new Mutual Aid toolkit, designed to help those feeling powerless in the face of the pandemic with the resources they need to get inspired and take action to provide help in their own communities.

What’s next — with your support

In fall 2020, 92Y will launch Campaign for 100% — a celebration of the collective power of voting. Through a series of deep-dive conversations with top thought leaders, activists, artists, journalists and politicians, the initiative will explore why it matters that everyone votes; how to ensure everyone can; and how more people voting improves individual communities and democracy overall.

In addition to conversations from 92Y’s virtual stage, now reaching millions of viewers from around the country, Campaign for 100% will build a national coalition of organizations and individuals to host community forums and spur action toward full voter participation.
