APPLICATION GUIDELINES and INFORMATION

For 143 years, 92Y has been a world-class cultural institution where people around the world connect through culture, the arts and entertainment. 92Y has harnessed the power of the arts and ideas to enrich, enlighten and change lives. It is a destination for influencers and pioneers on both sides of the podium to nurture talent and provide the space for innovative and exhilarating conversations and performances. The 92nd Street Y Jewelry Center serves 1,400 students each year through over 60 classes weekly and technical workshops in four fully equipped studios. It is the oldest open studio in New York City and the largest program of its kind in the country. The wide variety of courses and levels allow students to pursue comprehensive courses of study, whether it’s a basic introduction for the absolute beginner or advanced workshops and studio time for pre-professionals and professionals refining their skills.

The International Jewelry Artist Residency is a juried residency for cutting edge, emerging and established jewelry artists to develop their work in the multifaceted New York City art scene. For a month from mid-August to mid-September, the Residency will provide the opportunity for an international artist with a studio based practice to develop a new body of work or complete research while engaging with New York's cultural community.

The International Jewelry Residency includes access to 92Y Residence, 24-hour private studio working space and travel expenses to and from New York City.

This Residency offers the opportunity for an artist to share with the New York City design community their different aesthetic, technical or design impetus through a required 2-day lecture and workshop at 92Y Jewelry Center during the last weekend of the residency and through professional meetings with participating cultural institutions while expanding their artistic and professional opportunities.

ELIGIBILITY. Residencies are intended as professional development opportunities for jewelers and metalsmiths. Proposals for self-directed, creative residencies must be compatible with available working studio spaces, facilities, and resources. Artistic merit and promise are the basis for selections but the relevancy of how the New York City environment will effect or progress the artist’s work is weighed highly in the selection process.

Mature as well as emerging artists are encouraged to apply. The residency is awarded to one artist each year.

DEADLINE. Applications and supporting materials must be submitted by February 12, 2018 (with notification by April 2). Incomplete applications will not be accepted for review.

DURATION OF RESIDENCY. One month.

REFERENCES. Applicants are responsible for including three letters of character reference from individuals who are familiar with them and their creative work habits. Signed and sealed references may be included with the application. References sent under separate cover must be postmarked by the deadline. The references are confidential and kept on file for three years.

AWARDS. A rotating panel of experts and professionals in the arts and humanities independently review applications and supporting materials.

The International Jewelry Residency is for an individual artist and is not open to couples or collaborators. Unfortunately, the residency cannot accommodate spouses, children or partners during the term of the stay.

REAPPLICATION. After five years have lapsed, previous residents may reapply for a residency by submitting a new application with new work. Artists who have applied previously may reapply by submitting a new application and new work.
