Schools Partnership Program

What is a School Partnership?

The Partnership Program provides invited elementary public schools with comprehensive arts programs so that, in any given year, every child in the school engages in arts learning as part of the core curriculum. Students learn the fundamentals of their respective disciplines — dance, chorus, world music, visual art or digital design — and attend professional performances and exhibitions at 92Y. Professional development is provided for classroom teachers.

“The 92nd Street Y’s Schools Partnership Program is a partnership worth working hard to get and maintain.” Maureen Guido, Principal, PS/MS 278
“Our partnership with 92Y gives our students exposure to the arts and supports our S.T.E.A.M. initiative. All this would not have been possible without 92Y.” Joe Mattina, Principal, P. S. 23, Brooklyn, NY
Partnership Features:
  • 20 weeks of arts instruction from a professional visiting artist
  • Original curriculum materials aligned with the NYC Blueprint for the Arts
  • 92Y Arts Backpack (teaching toolkit)
  • Professional Development for classroom teachers and administrators
  • Performances and exhibitions at 92Y

Dance Partnership Program

92nd Street Y has been a historic home of modern dance, nurturing the talents of such dance pioneers as Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, Merce Cunningham and Pearl Primus. The Dance Partnership Program brings this legacy of dance teaching, creation and performance to the city’s public schools.

Creative Dance

The creative dance program allows students to engage in creative expression through dance while learning to communicate through the joyful and empowering language of movement.

“Dance gives students a way to shine and feel successful - encourages students to collaborate to create wonderful works of art” Leah Dowdy, 92Y dance teaching artist
Hip-hop Dance

We are pleased to offer hip-hop dance classes with 92Y’s Hip-hop to the Top Curriculum. Weekly classes take students through the evolution and innovative qualities of NYC’s own artistic genre, while incorporating developmentally appropriate skills into the creative process of dance.

Dance Introduction Series

The Dance Introduction Series (DIS) presents work choreographed by emerging, mid-career and legacy artists for young people studying dance in the NYC public schools through 92Y’s Schools Partnership Program. DIS combines dance and discussion, allowing artists and audience to engage with each other and explore intersections among a variety of dance genres.

Music Partnership Program

Built on the standards of excellence set by the School of Music at 92Y, the Music Partnership Program extends the methodology, pedagogy and expertise of our century-old establishment into New York City’s underserved school communities.

Chorus

92Y’s choral program opens young minds and hearts to the joy of choral singing. The curriculum explores musical concepts, such as proper breathing technique, harmony, rhythm, diction and tone production. Teaching artists incorporate repertoire that allows young singers to experience music with an understanding of the relationship that choral singing and songs have to history, culture and language.

East Harlem Inter-School Chorus

Over 300 92Y chorus students from four thriving East Harlem elementary schools come together for a unique choral experience celebrating inter-school and student collaboration. The Inter-School Chorus creates an unprecedented opportunity for the young voices of East Harlem’s culturally and artistically rich communities to sing, share, imagine and perform in harmony, reflecting their New York City heritage and their future as young American leaders.

Musical Theater

Musical theater classes provide students with an opportunity to immerse themselves in a vital art form that has its roots in New York City. From rehearsing dialogue, songs and choreography to learning about musical theater conventions, terminology, costuming and staging practices, budding actors have an active role in the creation of their own production.

Visual Art and Design Partnership Program

The Visual Art Partnership Program brings to public schools the quality of professional and varied fine arts education that is present in 92Y’s Art Center.

School Beautification

Throughout the year, students create individual works of art around a theme determined by the school. Young artists learn basic artistic concepts and principles, the social and historical significance of their collective artwork, and reinforce collaborative skills as they work together to create a large work of art that beautifies their school environment.

Ceramics

Through the ceramics program, students are immersed in the art of making ceramics, from learning the basic techniques of creating sound ceramic objects and applying glaze to the scientific, social and historical aspects of the art form. By the end of the school year students will have a thorough understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of ceramics and will create original pieces.

Digital Design

92Y launched its STEAM programs with 3D Digital Design, a dynamic project-based learning program that combines STEM pedagogy with a creative arts curriculum. Over the course of the school year, students learn SketchUp Pro (3D-modeling software for professionals) to complete engineering exercises, architectural sketches and create a major independent project that will be printed on a 3D printer and displayed for their school community.

Arts Introduction Series

Through 92Y’s Schools Partnership Program, students studying visual art and design will have the unique opportunity to come to 92Y to visit the Weill Art Gallery as part of the Arts Introduction Series (AIS). In its inaugural season, AIS will be presenting a solo exhibition by Colin Davidson.

AIS combines art and discussion allowing artist(s) and students to engage with each other while experiencing a private interactive tour of the gallery. Following the tour, students are invited to participate in a visual art workshop at 92Y.
