On Hitting Midlife

Sharon Goldman

You have just one;
            get it right.
Polish it so that it
shines like obsidian.
Sharpen it with the
precision of an arrant
pinhead, ruthless as a
Pharaoh’s laser.

No swerves, smudges
no idle plaque lest
floodwaters break
dams and spill backwards,
torrents dark with turgid
remnants rushing past us
faster than we can grab them.

Sharon grew up going to the 92 St. Y, and has recently returned from Massachusetts. She has studied at the Unterberg Center with Sharon Dolin and Catherine Barnett. When she is not writing or teaching, she is busy walking and playing with her Labrador retriever.
