Artist Statement

Painting and drawing are fundamental to the articulation of visual ideas. They are the simplest and most direct way of saying something. Drawing is nothing more than rubbing burnt wood into paper made from plants. Painting is colored dirt mixed with oil, applied with animal hair tied to a stick. And yet, they are somehow transformed from their elemental state into form, and space, and light. They are transformed from something inert and known, to something alive and evocative. Drawing and painting are about this transition; about turning charcoal into form, or mud into color. It is a searching rather than a knowing. It is a matter of measurement and touch, discovered through the process itself. It depends upon a constantly reductive attitude; always asking what is essential and what is not. In the end, the form and space and light always return to their origin as charcoal and paint, and the drawing or painting refers to itself.
