Christoph Prégardien and Julius Drake

Perhaps the most gifted lieder singer of our day, the tenor Christoph Prégardien makes his hotly anticipated 92Y return—following his sold-out debut in 2018—in this program of Schubert and Beethoven, which also serves to inaugurate 92Y’s new Vocal Series under the artistic direction of pianist Julius Drake.

This season, the series focuses on the Beethoven’s influence on the song cycle (which Beethoven, revolutionary in so many ways, invented!). Following closely in Beethoven’s footsteps was Schubert, who penned his immortal cycle Schwanengesang near the end of his life. On this program we hear it paired with the “original” entry into the genre, Beethoven’s cycle composed “to a distant beloved.”

  • Beethoven, Adelaide, Op. 46
  • Beethoven, Wonne der Wehmut, Op. 83, No. 1
  • Beethoven, Neue Liebe, neues Leben, Op. 75, No. 2
  • Beethoven, An die ferne Geliebte, Op. 98
  • Schubert, Schwanengesang, D. 957
