Orpheus Chamber Orchestra

The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra transports us to fin-de-siècle Vienna in this program of a single rarity: Arnold Schoenberg and Rainer Riehn’s chamber orchestration of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde—songs of the Earth.

Stemming from the days when musicians would assemble in salons to read chamber music together (another arrangement made during this era is a reduction of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony), this arrangement—abandoned by Schoenberg and completed years later by Riehn—has gained a life of its own due to its incredible transparency: we can see Mahler’s tremendous genius in an entirely new light. The “sublime” (Seattle Times) tenor Anthony Dean Griffey is joined by Alice Coote in this immense work, which Leonard Bernstein described as Mahler’s “greatest symphony.”
