Students and their teachers in grades 1-3 join celebrated visual artist John Parra for a conversation and workshop inspired by his illustrations for the award-winning children’s book Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos.
“Featuring charming visuals and lively, often lyrical prose” (Booklist), Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos explores the life of one of the world’s most influential painters, Frida Kahlo, and the beloved pets that populated her art. “Parra’s warm, weathered paintings are done in a flattened, folk-art style that vividly evokes the Mexican environment and heritage of which Kahlo was very proud” (Publishers Weekly). Students will have the chance to create their own self-portraits with pets inspired by Kahlo’s style and Parra’s elegant illustrations.
This event is produced through 92Y’s Young Leaders Series: a virtual education program that connects classrooms across the country with leading figures in the arts and humanities. The Series invites students to discover their own artistic and intellectual passions, identify resources to pursue those passions and shape the future of their world.
