Apple Music Country radio host and journalist Hunter Kelly curates and hosts a series of intimate conversations with some of the industry’s most iconic and influential artists, exploring their creative process, where their music is headed, and how they hope to expand the genre for those coming next.
Hunter Kelly kicks off his new 92Y series with country music legend Wynonna, as the five-time Grammy Award winner and vocal powerhouse sits down with her longtime friend for a career-spanning conversation with performances from her latest recording. At 18, Wynonna, then lead singer of The Judds, took the country world by storm, racking up 14 #1 hits. Her self-titled solo debut was certified platinum five times. Wynonna reflects on her evolution from young sensation to the musician she is today — a country music megastar still mining the depths of her artistry. She talks with Kelly about the making of her latest EP, Recollections, much of it recorded at her Tennessee farm while quarantined. A stripped down, entrancing album with tracks by Nina Simone, John Prine, the Grateful Dead and others, Wynonna and Kelly explore its direction against the backdrop of her musical roots in gospel, bluegrass and more. Complementing their conversation, Wynonna and her husband/musical partner Cactus Moser performs songs from Recollections as well as a re-imagined version of one of her biggest hits. And Kelly shares excerpts from never-before-heard interviews with Wynonna’s heroes and contemporaries, including Emmylou Harris, Brandy Clark and Reba McEntire, adding fresh insights on her continuing influence.
