Three of the reigning vocalists in jazz—NEA Jazz Masters Dee Dee Bridgewater and Dianne Reeves and Grammy Award winner Cassandra Wilson—join multiple Grammy-winning bassist and educator Christian McBride for an exploration of the musical and social influence of the incomparable Billie Holiday.
Singers from Frank Sinatra to Bob Dylan to Norah Jones have acknowledged Billie’s impact on their artistry. Bridgewater, Reeves and Wilson have gone further. Bridgewater paid tribute to Holiday in her 2009 album, Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie with Love from Dee Dee Bridgewater (also featuring McBride), and later starred in the 2013 Off Broadway musical Lady Day. Reeves toured with a series of Billie Holiday Centennial concerts in 2015. And Wilson reimagined the Billie Holiday songbook in her acclaimed 2015 album, Coming Forth By Day. Don’t miss the chance to hear this fascinating discussion of Billie’s groundbreaking and risk-taking artistry and legacy from three of the most revered artists carrying her influence today.
