“Music is a place where we can all come together and get to a higher plane and a higher space in life.”
At only 31, Christian Sands is arguably the leading jazz pianist of his generation. Whether it’s stride, swing, bebop, progressive, fusion, Brazilian or Afro-Cuban, Sands — a multi-Grammy Award nominee — develops the past while extending and enhancing the uniquely American art form. In this special event streamed live from 92Y’s storied concert hall, students and their teachers in grades 3-5 join the emerging jazz star and his trio for an exclusive performance of lyrical composition and searching improvisation.
Christian will share the story of his artistic journey, the importance of mentors, and why it’s essential for future generations of listeners to know the legacy of America’s original art form. Students will have the chance to ask the artists questions during the event.
This event is produced through 92Y’s Young Leaders Series: a virtual education program that connects classrooms across the country with leading figures in the arts and humanities. The Series invites students to discover their own artistic and intellectual passions, identify resources to pursue those passions and shape the future of their world.
