WBGO’s Lezlie Harrison hosts a free listening party focused on some of Billie Holiday’s most influential recordings, along with albums and tracks she influenced.
Artists including Dianne Reeves, Bob Dylan, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Norah Jones, Frank Sinatra, Cassandra Wilson and others carry Billie’s influence in their music. Billie’s signature song “Strange Fruit” has been recorded by Tori Amos, Nina Simone, Lou Rawls and Sting, among many others. Her “God Bless the Child” has been covered by artists from Aretha Franklin to Stevie Wonder to Annie Lennox. And the influence is wide and deep. Join us for an exploration of some of Billie’s most essential recordings and tracks by others, including Sam Cooke’s “Comes Love,” Etta James’ “I’ll Be Seeing You,” Joni Mitchell’s “You’ve Changed” and Amy Winehouse’s “There Is No Greater Love” — none of which would be what they are without the artistry of Lady Day.
