Into the Woods — Sondheim & Lapine, Broadway Experimentalists

Once again Sondheim and Lapine defy theatergoers expectations by writing Into the Woods, a musical fairy tale that accomplishes the difficult task of satisfying both adults and children.

Utilizing a unique approach to the usual Broadway musical’s two act structure, Into the Woods first explores how far its fairy tale characters are willing to go to arrive at the desired state of “happily ever after,” and then the consequences they must face after acquiring all they wished for. The score strikingly brings this duality to life with a mirror-like structure where each song in the breezier first act is somehow echoed and transformed in the darker second act.
