January 6 was a day like no other. How did our democracy go so wrong? What is the seductive lure of authoritarianism and why are many elites in democracies around the world turning toward nationalism and authoritarianism?
Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Anne Applebaum will give her view, discussing her book Twilight of Democracy — inspired by her 2018 Atlantic article “A Warning from Europe” and a finalist for a National Magazine Award. It was named a Best Book of the Year by The Washington Post and The Financial Times. Ms. Applebaum is also the author of three critically-acclaimed and award-winning histories of the Soviet Union: Red Famine, Iron Curtain, and Gulag, winner of the Pulitzer Prize.
Join us when she discusses how this shift happened and what is the road back to democratic values!
