Purity of Line, Simplicity of Style
This fall, 92Y and New York Theatre Ballet begin a collaboration bringing pre-professional training and performance opportunities to 92Y’s School of Dance. The new program, NYTB/92Y, is open to students starting at age 7, with curriculum based on the Cecchetti syllabus.
The curriculum is designed to develop strong technical skill and discipline alongside musicality, theatricality, gesture and style. The philosophy is aligned with the 92Y School of Dance’s broader values, looking holistically at each student and training them to be creative artists and thinkers as well as accomplished ballet dancers. The Cecchetti syllabus trains for versatility and performance quality, and has been the backbone of experience for dancers who have gone on to dance in a wide range of professional careers from New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theatre to Merce Cunningham Company and Broadway.
NYTB/92Y classes include live accompanists in all classes, emphasizing strong musicality, and teaching assistants and small class size allow for highly individualized instruction.
For qualified students, NYTB/92Y’s unique relationship the professional company, New York Theatre Ballet, provides performing experience throughout the year in ballets featuring roles for children such as The Nutcracker and Once Upon a Ballet series.
Students will also gain access into the dance world via additional workshops and open rehearsals with NYTB’s professional company.
Diana Byer, NYTB Founder and Artistic Director, who leads the program, comes with 40 years as Director of Ballet Instruction at NYTB School, and has a rich history with 92Y, performing here as a young dancer, and presenting NYTB programs during the past two seasons.
