Bestselling author Russell Shorto — who detailed the story in a New York Times Magazine piece — illuminates how Jo van Gogh-Bonger, a self-trained force in the art business, opened the world’s eyes to Vincent van Gogh’s genius.
As the wife of Vincent’s art-dealer brother, Theo, she was introduced to both his art and his tortured personality. When Vincent and Theo died young and in rapid succession, Jo inherited all the works of the still largely unknown artist. From Paris in the belle epoque, a city churning with art, theater, intellectuals, cafes and brothels, to Amsterdam and New York, she worked doggedly to make the world see Van Gogh’s work in new ways, and changed art forever.
