Suminagashi marbling is the oldest known form of marbling, originating in Japan in the 10th to 12th centuries.
This process, in which ink is floated onto the surface of water and then transferred to paper, yields beautiful and surprising patterns, ranging from simple to complex. This class provides an introduction to the art of suminagashi. After learning the basic techniques, students have ample time to create a number of their own suminagashi-decorated papers. All materials are provided.
