This course invites young writers to hone their analytical skills, broaden their understanding of form and develop a thread of direct literary influences.
Over the course of four weeks, we will survey a vast assortment of poets through close readings: both of received forms (such as the sonnet, the villanelle, etc.) and free verse. We will discuss and replicate specific techniques and craft elements through in class exercises. In addition, we will align habits and recurring techniques of our own work with that of our "literary ancestors." For the workshop component, students will create original drafts and submit for peer and instructor feedback each week.
Class meets on Oct 25, Nov 1, 8 and 15.
