This class is dedicated to exploring the versatility of cut paper as a technique for creating innovative 2D compositions.
Students will learn a variety of ways to use cut paper creating collaged paintings, working from observation and imagination. Mixed-media techniques will be introduced, teaching students to create their own painted paper stylized with prints, textures and designs. Through topics including still life, the figure and non-traditional portraiture, students will expand their tools for self expression while also learning the fundamentals of composition. This class will survey the work of pioneering artists including Mary Delany, Henri Matisse, Kara Walker, Anne Toebbe and Anthony Iocono who use painted cut paper in their work.
