Joan Didion wrote, “We tell ourselves stories in order to live.”
In this course, students will write memoir pieces and share them with the class, and we will give each other the focused, empathetic attention we need to engage in the risky, exhilarating process of telling the stories that mean the most to us. In-class discussion will focus on craft elements such as structure and voice, as well as ethical considerations including writing about other people and handling truth and fact. We will read a variety of published work to explore the possibilities of the genre, and learn how to both deepen and generate work via experiential and personal archival research. We will also do in-class writing exercises to gain skills and find material for stories, and discuss how to tweak our personal writing processes to become more productive, confident, happy writers.
Class meets Mondays: February 15, 22, March 1, and 8.
