This course invites young writers to stretch the horizon of their voice, learn the tools of the craft and develop their own writing practice.
We dissect the mechanics of fiction by investigating what a text is doing, how language is used, how character is done and how voice is developed and sustained. In other words, we learn how to read like a writer. Furthermore, we ask ourselves why something speaks to us and how we can recreate that effect in own writing. In doing so, we come away with a deeper understanding of their own artistic tastes and tendencies. As an accompaniment to the craft class, we will respond to brief writing exercises based on that day’s craft class. The third component of the class is the workshop. The workshop is an opportunity for us to share work and give and receive constructive feedback. We learn how to discuss each other’s work through the lens of craft, always focusing on how a craft tool was deployed and to what effect.
