Join veteran art consultant Ronnit Vasserman for a look at three of the most influential and original photographers of the last century and their continuing impact on the medium of photography: Diane Arbus, Cindy Sherman, and Francesca Woodman.
Over the course of three sessions, Vasserman will lead participants on an exploration of these trailblazing artists — showing how each of them left a distinct mark on the art form.
In the first lecture, Vasserman guides participants through the world of Diane Arbus, who helped to establish photography as a recognized and respected art form with her empathetic and strikingly intimate portraits of carnival entertainers and others considered on the margins of society. In the second lecture, participants will look deeply into the still-evolving oeuvre of Cindy Sherman, considering her groundbreaking and arresting staged self-portraits and their ingenious relationship to film and fashion. In the third lecture, participants will consider Francesca Woodman, who — before her tragic death at the age of 22 — frankly depicted relationships, sexuality, alienation, and identity, establishing a distinctively feminist legacy. Participants will come away with a greater understanding of these three brilliant women and their work, their impact on contemporary visual culture, and the making of a feminist aesthetic over the course of the 20th century.
