In the beginning of the 20th century, brilliant female jewelry designers like Julia Munson, Suzanne Belperron, Jeanne Touissant, were overshadowed by the famous jewelry houses that employed them (think Tiffany & Co, Boivin, Cartier).
While these jewelers shaped the taste of women everywhere and created unforgettable and groundbreaking designs that are still sought after by collectors today, their contribution was rarely known outside the jewelry world until recently. The situation began to change in the post-World War II era, when female jewelers played a prominent role in the studio jewelry movement that provided them with opportunities to forge their independence. Fast-forward to the late 20th century where women jewelers have made a name for themselves in the contemporary jewelry world. This course will introduce students to the historically significant female jewelers who were working in Europe and the US during the 20th century and today.
