Important Update: 92Y remains open
This class will teach students to create their own texture hammers to make unique metal surfaces for handmade jewelry.
They will learn how to carve their own designs into the hammer faces, heat treat the hammer heads for durability, and set the heads on handles. If you do not have a troch at home the hammer heads can be mailed to the instructor for hardening and tempering the hammer heads mand mailed back to be set them on handles for a fee.
This class runs in real time for 2 days at 7 hours per day. The class format includes a complete series of videos that run 3-5 minutes per clip on the Vimeo platform. Students will receive links to the videos 2 days before the workshop so they can begin reviewing. They will also receive a kit a week before the workshop. On the first day of class, at 9 am Eastern Time, there will be a 30-60 minute Zoom conference to go over the kits and answer initial questions. Students will be expected to work from 10 am-12 pm, then there will be a Zoom meeting to check in. Students then work from 1-3 pm, then a final conference for the day from 3-4 pm. I will be available during class hours both days to answer questions via either text, FaceTime, or Zoom. If students feel comfortable with their progress, they are not required to attend the entire Zoom conferences—they can just check in then go back to their work. Andrea Harvin-Kennington is generously donating 10% of her fee to The Jewelry Center as a donation.
