Beethoven’s thirty-two sonatas for piano, written over the course of his entire compositional life, comprise one of the most remarkable and important collections of works in the history of music.
Our course traces the evolution of his style and transformation of the medium through in-depth explorations of key pieces ranging from early masterpieces (the Pathetique and Moonlight Sonatas), through major works of his Heroic style (the Waldstein and Appassionata Sonatas), the unprecedented, ground-breaking Hammerklavier Sonata, and the exceptionally beautiful, transcendent last works, Sonatas Nos. 31 in A-flat Major and 32 in C Minor. Come explore some of the greatest music ever written, all in the context of the journey of Beethoven’s life and the revolutionary and tumultuous Napoleonic Era — and its immediate aftermath — within which he lived.
