The Bauhaus School in Germany, founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius, was arguably the most important art and design school of the 20th Century.
Art historian Sylvia Laudien-Meo closely examines the formative movement where innovative and now world-famous artists, like Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Anni and Josef Albers, Moholy Nagy, and Marcel Breuer, got their start.
Taking its roots in the Arts and Crafts movement, the Bauhaus focus shifted increasingly more towards modern design and mass production. Similar to movements like Art Nouveau, the Bauhaus followed the ideals of breaking down the boundaries between fine art and design. All students mastered basic elements before choosing a specialty workshop: sculpture, glass, metal, weaving, wall painting, photography, printing and advertising, graphic art, Stagecraft.
During this class, in 4 sessions, we will discuss the history of the school with its move from Weimar to Dessau and Berlin and the intense political controversies during the Nazi era. Students will come away with a deep knowledge of various Bauhaus artworks by both teachers and students, their revolutionary new approaches, and influences for the new modern era.
This class will take place on Tuesday February 8, 15, 22, and March 1 from 12-1:30 pm ET. This class will be recorded for later viewing.
