This course introduces us to the quartets and chamber music of three of the great composers of the early Romantic Era, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Schumann.
The chamber music of these composers reflects the “classical” side of Romanticism, their compositions building on the classical approach of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, while at the same time emphasizing the new heightened emotional character of early Romantic expression. A secondary emphasis will be placed on examples of their groundbreaking work for solo piano; and all of the work explored will be considered in context of the major musical, political, philosophical and artistic trends of the first half of the 19th century.
