By any measure, 1970 was an extraordinary year in popular song, a year when the singer-songwriter came of age, with the best among them creating albums that flow like song cycles and were destined to influence generations of songwriters to come.
The albums that we’ll explore in depth include Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water; George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass; Joni Mitchell’s Ladies of the Canyon; John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band; Laura Nyro’s Christmas and the Beads of Sweat; Randy Newman’s 12 Songs; Bob Dylan’s New Morning; James Taylor’s Sweet Baby James; and from the songwriting/concept album angle, Stephen Sondheim’s Company among others. These are albums that everyone who loves song should know. Our goal is to make the familiar seem fresh, and work that is less known to you familiar, all in context of the specific artist’s body of work and against the backdrop of a tumultuous year filled with social and political unrest.
