Fifty years have passed since The Beatles performed their final concert on the roof of EMI’s Abbey Road Studios, the extraordinary gathering at Woodstock and the dark omen that was The Rolling Stones’ concert at Altamont Speedway.
But by any measure, 1969 was an extraordinary year in popular music, and in the intersection of music, politics and culture. We’ll explore the major album and singles that were released by a broadly diverse range of artists, all of whom we now describe as legends: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Laura Nyro, The Rolling Stones, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Temptations, Glen Campbell, James Brown. Bob Dylan and on and on; and all explored against the backdrop of the end of the most tumultuous decade of the second half of the 20th century.
