Elisabeth Kley is a New York artist known for her black and white ceramic sculptures, drawings and site-specific paintings. She draws motifs from historic ornamentation found in cultures and styles including Roman, Egyptian, Byzantine, Islamic and Wiener Werkstate. Collapsing geography and history, she translates the imagery she finds into graphic all-over patterns that convey the opulence and spirit of their original sources.
Kley’s solo exhibitions of ceramics, watercolors, drawings and prints have taken place at Window on Broad, Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery, University of the Arts in Philadelphia (2019), Pierre Marie Giraud in Brussels (2017), CANADA in New York (2016), GAVLAK in Palm Beach (2015), 39 Great Jones in New York, (2014) Schema Projects in Brooklyn (2014), John Tevis Gallery in Paris, France (2012), Georgian National Gallery in Tbilisi (2011), Le Petit Versailles (2010) in New York and Momenta Art (2007) in Brooklyn.
Her two person and group exhibitions include 56 Henry, Gordon Robichaux, Mitchell Algus Gallery, Orgy Park, Regina Rex, CANADA, Andrew Edlin, Haunch of Venison, and Exit Art in New York, South Willard and VENUS in Los Angeles, GAVLAK in Los Angeles and Palm Beach, Season in Seattle, Soccer Club Club in Chicago and anonymous in Mexico City. In Spring 2021, she will mount an installation of new ceramic sculpture and silkscreened fabrics at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia.
She was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 1998. A monograph on her work was published this year by CANADA and Pre-Echo Press. She is represented by CANADA.
