Musical Introduction Series

"The arts humanize us and give us a glimpse as to why we exist, why we are alive. The arts give us all that and more. Without the arts, we really die as a society." – Arturo O’Farrill, Grammy Award Winner

92nd Street Y’s Musical Introduction Series empowers children in grades K-3 to explore the world’s musical genres, engage in music-making, and, by learning about rich musical traditions in class and at live performances, cultivate a global perspective that nurtures empathy and understanding of diverse cultures and backgrounds.

The 2017-18 92Y Musical Introduction Series will take students on a journey through the ancient Silk Road trade route, a network of east-west paths connecting the Mediterranean Sea to China. It stretched over 7,000 miles, or 1/4 of the way around the globe. Traditional music ensembles from China, Syria, Uzbekistan and Armenia will guide our musical caravan and illustrate the spread of ideas, technology and traditions. Artists include Wu Man, Zulal, Shashmaqam and Gaida.

All of our artists perform traditional and new music with origins in cultures found along the Silk Road. This season, students will imagine themselves as merchants in a medieval Silk Road caravan. As they travel and trade goods in each artists' musical culture of origin, students will perform songs, dances and folktales from each culture.
