Increase your fluency and ability to communicate by learning more grammar, vocabulary and idioms.

Ideal for those who have recently completed Level I, or who have had more experience with the language and would like to improve their fluency. This class is for those who have a basic working French vocabulary of nouns and verbs, and who are comfortable putting together basic complete sentences.

Textbook required: French, A Self-Teaching Guide by Suzanne Herschfield-Haims, supplemented by hand-outs.
Chapters 5-8 will be covered in French II. Please note that some levels may also supplement lessons with a reader. Students will be told on the first day of class if their section requires one.

Topics include:

  • Review of Level I
  • Idiomatic expressions with AVOIR
  • Demonstrative and Possessive Adjectives
  • The near Future with ALLER
  • Direct Object Pronouns
  • Passé Composé with AVOIR and ETRE
  • Vocabulary

Brief Bios

Christina Rufin was born and raised in Belgium and has been teaching French for more than 20 years. She has taught at many prestigious organizations and institutions including The French I nstitute and The New School for Social Research. She has been teaching at 92Y since 2000.

Tanyika Carey holds a BA in psychology from Boston University and a MA in translation for French and Spanish from the CUNY Graduate Center. She studied at Université de Grenoble in France and teaches French, Spanish and ESL. Her past client list includes The Cultural Services of the French Embassy, Lauryn Hill and La Fábrica Films.

Victor Aka is a native French speaker who grew up in Paris. He read French/English/German translation at the Université de Savoie in France. He has worked on French language classroom content (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) and has been a French voice-over artist for animation (Audioworks Producers Group). He has extensive translation/interpretation industry experience managing projects for major French companies such as Air France, France Télécom, BNP Paribas.

Who is eligible for priority registration?

Individuals who have participated in 92nd Street Y programs over the past year in selected program areas, participants in certain memberships, and those who have made contributions of $500 or more to 92Y, are eligible to register for programs before they become available to the general public.

How do I know if I qualify?

Patrons that qualify for Priority Registration will receive packets in the mail explaining how to purchase online. Priority registration is normally mailed 2-3 weeks before a catalog is available. Registration information includes your Patron ID#. You can use this ID# to setup your login information online. This will allow you to register early for a course or event. Please note: if you receive a packet, you are only eligible to priority register for the programs covered in your packet.
