Walter Hill in Person with Southern Comfort

The one, the only... Walter Hill—director of The Driver, The Warriors, 48 Hrs., the Deadwood pilot (for which he won an Emmy), Broken Trail (Emmy for outstanding miniseries), The Long Riders, Wild Bill, to name but a few, and now the highly anticipated upcoming Warner Bros. film Bullet to the Head starring Sylvester Stallone.
Walter Hill is a filmmaker and screenwriter of increasingly rare qualities: elegance in storytelling, subtle moral intelligence, a sharp eye for staging action. (“Shoot [action] as an extension of the drama itself,” he said in a 2007 interview.) Put another way, he is a great director and stylist of genre—where genre means not simply “Western” or "crime" but a space for thoughtful consideration of age-old problems, both of the human predicament and of filmmaking and storytelling.
92Y Tribeca, which previously showed the director’s 1975 debut Hard Times, is thrilled to host Mr. Hill for a Q&A following a screening of Southern Comfort. The rarely screened 1981 film pits a squad of National Guardsmen, deep in Louisiana muck, against the Bayou’s finest (and themselves). Powers Boothe, Keith Carradine, and Fred Ward star in a no-holds-barred film featuring a Ry Cooder score, and directed by the man of the hour, Walter Hill.
Part of the Overdue film series, programmed by Nicolas Rapold and Nick Pinkerton.
Tickets: $12, Film Club Member: $8.
