The Gate

When an ancient tree is removed from his backyard, dweeby moppet Glen (Stephen Dorff in his film debut) discovers that the steaming chasm left behind may be a gateway to Hell.
Glen’s metalnerd pal Terry (McLovin in a stonewashed jean jacket) hatches a plan: playing a record by Satanic metal band Sacrifyx, backwards. Before you can say “ill-advised”, the gate spits out a tempest of subterranean beastopoids upon their suburban enclave. Dubiously marketed as a kid's movie, this is easily one of the most twisted films to earn a PG-13, featuring such phantasmagoric sights as a rotting corpse blown to bits by a boom box, a hallucination involving Glen's absentee parents melting into goo and arguably the most brutal dog death in cinema history. A triumph of low-budge pre-CG creature FX (with utmost care devoted to the twitchiness of the mutant troll army), owing a monster debt to both Harryhausen and Lovecraft.
