“Break his heart, I break your face.”

From the pen of John Hughes comes this gender-flipped emo redux of his own valentine classic Pretty in Pink, released less than a year after the original, and the final crowning chapter of his teen angst oeuvre.

Eric Stoltz stands in for Molly Ringwald as the sensitive redhead loner crushing hard for a preppy queen bee, unaware that his BFF, tomboy drummer Mary Stuart Masterson, has been hiding a secret unrequited crush of her own. If Pretty in Pink is the big pop dance number, Some Kind of Wonderful is the stripped down cover of the same song in a minor key, a surprisingly nuanced riff on Hughes’s weakness for anguished lovesick high schoolers. “It has a light touch, a disarming cast, a well-developed sense of humor and a lot of charm. It also shows off, even better than the earlier films have, Mr. Hughes's keen understanding of the world his young characters inhabit and the ways in which they might behave.” – Janet Maslin, New York Times

Director: Howard Deutch. 93min. 1987. 35mm.

Part of the series Basic Cable Classics.

Also screening this evening at 10 pm: Can’t Buy Me Love. Buy tickets to both films and get a free PBR!
