A Time to Love and a Time to Die

7 pm

"I have never found wartime Germany so credible as in watching this American film made in peacetime."—Jean-Luc Godard

In adapting Erich Maria Remarque's novel, Sirk, born Hans Detlef Sierck, finally returned to his native Germany after the war, and filmed the Eastern Front where his only son died wearing a Nazi uniform. It's love-among-the-ruins—the key image is a party dress blossoming in flames—set during a late-war furlough to collapsed Berlin, with John Gavin a German soldier home on leave, courting Lilo Pulver. Like Minnelli's The Clock filtered through Hieronymous Bosch, with a massive Miklós Rózsa score.

Director: Douglas Sirk. 132 min. 1958. 35mm.

The Tarnished Angels

9:30 pm

Rock Hudson is a journalist who sees a story (and unbridled life) in the fast-and-loose world of stunt flyers—especially barnstorming Robert Stack and his open-minded wife Dorothy Malone. Sirk adapts William Faulkner’s 1935 novel Pylon with black-and-white CinemaScope and intoxicating fatalism in this lesser-seen triumph from the director’s most adored decade. Faulkner, an avid flyer who credited Howard Hawks with spurring along the original book, singled out Hudson’s performance for praise.

Director: Douglas Sirk. 91 min. 1958. 35mm.

Ticket Price: $12

Part of the series Overdue, programmed by Nick Pinkerton and Nicolas Rapold.
