Mixing experimental rock and soul with African and Latin beats, People's Champs are quickly establishing themselves as one of Brooklyn's freshest new bands. Led by trombonist Alex Asher and featuring lead vocals by diva-on-the-rise Cole Williams, People's Champs mash '80s electro-accordion riffs, neo-soul vocals and gritty drum grooves to create a sound that’s equal parts Gorillaz, Michael Jackson, Fela Kuti and Ornette Coleman.
With one highly successful album, Something's Gonna Start, already behind them in Australia, The Hipstones are on a musical odyssey that has taken them from the clubs and music festivals of their home town of Sydney to the recording studios of the Big Apple. Internationally, they have shared bills with the likes of Chaka Khan, Jamie Cullum and Frank McComb. Their move to New York has been part of a natural progression that brings this songwriting duo closer to their musical roots and their great love of the American soul, funk and jazz traditions.
“A very appealing and distinctive recording that combines a kind of thread of 1960s-style soul with an intriguing mix of other ingredients, such as jazz harmonic complexity, and sometimes a kind of dreamy atmospheric texture”.
