Etienne Charles stands at the vanguard of a new generation of musicians who are from the Caribbean with a fresh and broad-ranging artistic vision.
His musical lineage runs at least four generations deep and growing up he was immersed in the sounds of calypso, steel pan and African Shango drumming that now reflect a diverse rhythmic and harmonic palette in his playing. A Julliard alumnus, Charles has received critical acclaim for his exciting performances, thrilling compositions and a knack for connecting with audiences worldwide.
His latest release, Kaiso (Culture Shock Music 2011), puts Etienne's musical spin on some of the classics from the songbooks of Lord Kitchener, the Mighty Sparrow and Roaring Lion. His previous release Folklore (Culture Shock Music 2009) received numerous accolades as well as being named #6 Jazz Album of the Year by NPR (WDUQ). He has performed with a host of legends in different genres including Roberta Flack, Wynton Marsalis, Count Basie Orchestra, Maria Schneider, Johnny Mandel, Marcus Roberts, Frank Foster, Paquito D’Rivera, Lord Blakie, Arrow and David Rudder.
