Sarah Tolar (voice): Sarah Tolar is a Brooklyn based singer-songwriter. Born into a musical family in Colorado, Sarah grew up in southern California before moving to Texas to earn a Bachelor of Music and a Master's degree in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas. During her time at UNT, Sarah was awarded "Best College Female Vocalist" by Downbeat Magazine. Sarah's debut album, Big Blue Moon, featuring her original compositions and some of New York's finest musicians, received rave reviews and indie-radio airplay worldwide. Sarah has toured with her band throughout the northeast, as well as Europe and China. She is currently recording her second album of original compositions. Sarah has been on the voice faculty of the 92Y School of Music since 2011.
David Cook (piano): Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Brooklyn-based pianist David Cook is invested in the NYC jazz scene and beyond. As a leader, his 2010 trio album Pathway received critical acclaim; as a sideman, he has played for jazz notables Lizz Wright, Alan Ferber, Grace Kelly and more, and also serves as the keyboardist and Musical Director for 7 time Grammy-winner Taylor Swift. He has been a member of the Brooklyn Jazz Underground for the past 2 years and is looking forward to releasing a new record later this year on the BJUR label.
Matt Brandau (bass): Matthew Brandau is an NYC bassist and producer. Originally from Charlotte, NC, Matt began playing bass at age 15. "I can honestly say I've played about every type of music imaginable and with every type of personality imaginable. Music is my passion, and I enjoy every opportunity to create regardless of genre. I love what I do and feel very fortunate." Matt has toured all over the world (States, Canada, Europe, South America). He also has quite a bit of studio experience having recorded or performed on over 100 records. A few of the bands and artists he's toured/recorded with include, Branford Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, Portastatic, Dexter Romweber Duo, Elvis Costello, Pete Rock, DJ Premire, Talib Kweli, The DBs, Skibeatz, Herbie Hancock, Jessica Lea Mayfield, 9th Wonder, The Old Ceremony, Joan Osborne and Jewel. Matt holds a BA of Music from UNC-Chapel Hill.
Tony Mason (drums): Tony Mason grew up in Southern Pines, NC. He graduated from Manhattan School of Music with a Bachelor's in percussion performance. Tony has toured and recorded with John Scofield, Norah Jones, Joan Osborne, Paula Cole, Charlie Hunter, Bo Diddley, Neil Sedaka, Soup Dragons and many others.
This is part of the 92Y School of Music Faculty Concert Series. All concerts are free of charge and held in the Weill Art Gallery.
