When people talk about modern urban design, attention turns to public parks.
Landscape and urban designer Diana Balmori will argue that the real issue is not creating parks, or greening cities, or planting trees. She will illustrate with her work that landscape’s role in cities today is creating new relationships between water, earth, air and the city. Her designs reflect scientific and poetic concepts—scientific in showing self-sustainable ecologies where humans play the role of builders, poetic in inviting people into close relationships with an ever-changing nature. Rather than seeing divisions between art, nature and the city, Balmori’s work shows how ecology connects them to each other and to us.
This influential and bold designer talks at 92Y with Peter Reed, the senior deputy director of curatorial affairs at the Museum of Modern Art. Balmori will show slides of her surprising work (including New York’s largest “green roof” – atop Silvercup Studios in Queens) and explain her vision of design improving our lives and the life of the nature around us. Brief Biography
Diana Balmori is principal of Balmori Associates, a landscape and urban design firm based in New York. She works across the globe and has been named one of “50 Visionaries Changing Your World” by the Utne Reader. She is the author of several books, including A Landscape Manifesto published by Yale University Press and Groundwork, with Joel Sanders, published by Monacelli Press.

Who is eligible for priority registration?
Individuals who have participated in 92nd Street Y programs over the past year in selected program areas, participants in certain memberships, and those who have made contributions of $500 or more to 92Y, are eligible to register for programs before they become available to the general public.
How do I know if I qualify?
Patrons that qualify for Priority Registration will receive packets in the mail explaining how to purchase online. Priority registration is normally mailed 2-3 weeks before a catalog is available. Registration information includes your Patron ID#. You can use this ID# to setup your login information online. This will allow you to register early for a course or event. Please note: if you receive a packet, you are only eligible to priority register for the programs covered in your packet.
