To several generations of Russians, Vladimir Vysotsky (1938-1980), is the undisputed Bard of Russia and one of the most beloved figures in the pantheon of Russian culture. His songs appeal to people of all backgrounds and seem to tell everything there is to know about Soviet Russia.
NYU professor of ethnomusicology Dr. Martin Daughtry, and actor, director and faculty member of Julliard’s drama division Moni Yakim come together to celebrate Vysotsky’s work. Together with musicologist and writer Solomon Volkov, the author of many best-selling books about Russian culture, they discuss the life and art of this legendary artist. The conversation, accompanied by footage of original recordings of Vysotsky performing his songs (with English subtitles), is followed by a presentation of scenes from the musical Let Us Fly, based on English language version of Vysotsky’s songs and created by Moni and Mina Yakim.
