Taking place in an undefined era "Not so long ago," Whit Stillman's first film is a classic New York City holiday film with its blend of dizzying celebration and chilly melancholia. As the twentieth anniversary of the film approaches, it's time to take another look at this accomplished piece of filmmaking. Its measured deadpan tone went on to influence other directors like Noah Baumbach and Wes Anderson, but the film seems peerless. It's like nothing else from its era, having more in common with classic Hollywood films by directors like Sturges, Lubitsch and Stevens. The opening scene of casual crossed paths outside of the Plaza Hotel is brilliant and appropriately kicks off the swirl of deb balls and intimate after
parties that illustrate the subtle social mores of one group of young New Yorkers during the holidays.
Whit Stillman will be in person for a Q&A after the film. This
conversation will be followed by a holiday mixer, to kick off the season, with DJ's playing classic oldies tunes.
Director: Whit Stillman. 98 min. 1990. | |
