Roberta Cantow: If This Ain't Heaven and Clotheslines
A FREE screening with 16mm film prints from the archive of the New York Public Library.

Roberta Cantow's documentary work from the 1980s displays an innovative approach to nonfiction storytelling. We're excited to present two of her films in this program.

If This Ain't Heaven (28 min. 1984.)
A portrayal of the relationship between a man and his pet cat. "An intimate portrait of an ordinary man who fulfills unknowingly his own ideal of the ventriloquist/artist. Considers questions of loneliness and isolation. It is at once my own interpretation of the man, the man's presentation of himself and the man's interpretation of his art form, the cat. The voiceover becomes an interior monologue; the images become more emblematic than real."—R.C.

Clotheslines (32 min. 1981.)
Brightly colored wash hanging out to dry in rural and urban environments is the subject of this poetic documentary exploring the roles of women and their often inescapable bondage to domestic duties. Voice-over comments by women of varying ages and ethnic groups reveal their feelings concerning the ritualistic chores of the laundry and their intrinsic place in the folkloric tradition of female life. All films are courtesy of the Reserve Film and Video Collection of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
