Since 1935 the 92nd Street Y, celebrating 75 years in 2009-2010, has nurtured breakthrough talent in dance. Ailey, Cunningham, Graham, Humphrey, Joffrey, Robbins and Sokolow are just some of the pioneers who have graced our stage. Today at the Harkness Dance Center, gifted artists continue to perform, rehearse, teach and celebrate the singular art of dance.
About the Classes Classes for "absolute beginners" are taught slowly, at the most basic level, for students who have never danced before. Beginning-level classes is for students who have taken some dance classes and/or have not danced for a long time. We recommend at least one year of recent dance for advanced beginning level classes and at least two years for intermediate level classes. Advanced and professional classes assume advanced proficiency and recent practice. Afro-Caribbean, ballet, Duncan, flamenco and modern classes feature live accompaniment. Showers are available in the dressing room. Faculty listings are subject to change.
