 | | | | | Grant Hart, Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers   | | | | | | Grant Hart was only 17 when he founded iconic band Hüsker Dü in 1979 with Greg Norton and Bob Mould. They became one of the most influential bands of the 1980s, a precursor to the alt rock explosion of the '90s and their output on the legendary SST label and then Warner Brothers is a cornerstone of the current indie scene. Hart's solo records since leaving the band in 1987 have channeled Hüsker Dü's combination of punk aggression and melodic hooks into subtle, thematic renderings that build up to dramatic climaxes. His brand new album Hot Wax, which came out in October, has been called the best of his solo work. This is the only NYC stop on his tour supporting it.

Shilpa Ray and her Happy Hookers play grinding blues, sleazy jazz and bracing rock with punk immediacy and pop appeal—resulting in something like a vulgar Ella Fitzgerald channeling Nick Cave and PJ Harvey. "She's gonna be huge"—Brooklyn Vegan | |
